It's very true. Even though I've had a bit of a personal war against mary-sues I've had a very major one in the past. I also acknowledge that characters (even my own) have "sue-qualities" though that in of itself doesn't make a character a sue.
One of my oldest characters was a major-major sue, able to do just about anything. After I learned more of roleplaying and read many good books I made many changes to him into something very much not a sue. He has his limits and issues and flaws like any normal person, which is important in any character. While I certainly do still have some very powerful characters, they have pleny of their own flaws of quirks.
The first part of growing out of sueness though is recognizing what it is and that maybe you have a problem.
God I've dealt with Mary-sues alot and I'm tired of them. It sucks cause most the the people I Roleplay with have glorified one and are treating him like he's a hevensent. I've had to leave that place and I barely RP anymore but it's worth it to not deal with the Mary-sue anymore.
I happens unfortionatly. Further problems come with the internet where all the Sue-bags can group up, pat each other on the back, and reinforce troublesome behaviors.
That, I think, is a pretty healthy decision you took; also why I tend to not really RP much anymore. (Though I might be the type to make an Anti-Sue a lot)

I can understand that many people would like to make their fictional characters a perfected representation of themselves, but Many-Sue's are just annoying. They're always perfect in everything they do, and are simply unrealistic in a way that grates on most people's nerves.
There is nothing wrong with making a character powerful, strong, or smart. After all, you want to be proud of the character you create and there are enough movies and books out there in which the main character is a scrawny weakling. However, taking it to the ultimate extreme in which the character is so powerful that he/she can do whatever the hell they want and have no flaws or Achilles's heel makes them unbelievable and annoying.
Heh, reminds me so much of a comic strip which I found on ED about stereotypical Mary-Sues [link]

Do I ever agree with you, so many of my characters have just... grown up, it's really a good way of putting it, they have more to them. I'm totally using this.

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
A Special Collection of photographs i found this month that still haunts my mind. Show them some love There are always some i can`t include due to space, i try to make the features under 50 deviations to give them better exposure
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

I've just recently realized that a few of my characters are Gary Stu-ish.
But I'm pretty sure most of mine aren't, especially the ones in a major project that I'm working on with ~revell.
